To evaluate the diagnostic potential of digitally altered magnetic resonance (MR) images obtained from patients with melanomas or squamous cell carcinomas and different anatomic sites. With approval from the Ethics Committee of the University of Greifswald, 576 sequences of 12 patients (5 with melanoma, 2 with parotid carcinoma, 1 with basal cell carcinoma, and 4 with squamous cell carcinoma) were retrospectively evaluated. Image sequences were obtained using a conventional MR unit (Magnetom Vision Plus; Siemens Medical Systems, Erlangen, Germany) and the following sequence parameters: 2D turbo spin-echo (repetition time, 3500 msec; echo time, 110 msec) before and after the injection of gadolinium-diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (Gd-DTPA) with and without fat suppression. The data sets were then analyzed by experienced radiologists on a workstation, and histopathologic correlation was obtained. The control group consisted of 12 randomly selected patients without tumors. The digital alterations were performed using image-processing software (Visage Imaging, Inc, Fairfield, NJ). The average diameter of the tumors was 5.5 mm (range, 3.4-12.6 mm). The digital alterations caused an objective change in the appearance of 13 melanomas (0.5-16.0 mm; mean, 3.9 mm), of which 10 were found and 1 was missed. After digital alterations, a change in the T2-weighted appearance of 4 basal cell carcinomas (1.0-3.7 mm) and 2 squamous cell carcinomas (2.2-3.5 mm) was noted. Digital alterations can be359ba680
